We were on tv!

Well....sorta....lol.

There is a CBC program called Living Newfoundland & Labrador. It showcases various things happening in and around Newfoundland. They did a segment on the St. John's Farmers' Market and as some of you may remember, we were a part of that market for a few months.

I say we were 'sorta' on tv....because while we weren't interviewed, you can see us in the background (and...quite frankly...that will be the closest we will ever make it to being on tv lol). After they stop panning around the room and show the interview, we can be seen in the background. Our table has a red table cloth, dh has a blue shirt on and I have a light pink one on. Brittney and Jake can also be seen (at one point Jake gives me a hug lol).

Anyway, you can see it here

Happy Blog Anniversary To My Blog!

Wow....hard to believe I've been blogging for a whole year!

I never thought I had that much to say (ya....I know...I can hear y'all laughing at me saying that ;0)

(P.S. Thanks to all of you for your encouraging words yesterday.)

Checking in....

Just wanted to let y'all know....we're still alive here. We haven't been snowed under or swallowed up by the ocean. Just the opposite in fact. It's been cold, for here anyway (-13 C), but we have hardly any snow. The sun is shining today, the sky and the ocean are both beautiful shades of blue. The wind is average for here and the fire in the wood stove is wonderful.

I've started my annual watch for icebergs.....even though it is still waayyy too early.....I like to play it up with my kids (they think I'm strange and I wouldn't want to disappoint them...have to keep them on their toes ya know). Those of you who have been following here or know me, remember that last year I named all of the ice bergs that floated into our bay. All of 'my' icebergs' names began with the letter "I".....Iqbal was the first, then there was Igor, Isac....just to name a few. I sent pictures to everyone I knew....I was quite excited. One of 'my' icebergs made it onto the national news. My friend Lori in Ontario recognized the iceberg on tv as I'd sent her lots of pictures of it.

Tyler especially thought I was strange and should curtail my exuberance. Turn about is fair play though....and I remember so many times feeling rather red-faced at his shenanigans when he was young. Yes...it is good to turn the tables every once in awhile. *wink*

Jake even asked me, "If ever an iceberg comes along that isn't yours, could you tell me. I'd like to have one too and be able to name it." lol

Of course we're all just joking....(except for Tyler who doesn't seem to like me exclaiming loudly in the park, "LOOK, LOOK, IT'S AN ICEBERG!!!!" He said, "Mom, Mom shhh people are looking at us.")

So ya....we're all still hangin' in here.....doing not much and at the same time doing a lot. Things have been very stressful here lately (thus the lack of posts).....to put it mildly.....so many twists and turns along the way. Health concerns to deal with and to work out while trying one's best to look after their own family.....that would seem to be more than enough. Then....to find out some of the people, who one *thought* could be trusted the most, end up dishing out a double whammy. Why, I wonder, do people get such joy in kicking others when they are already down?

Oh well...onward and upward. How does that saying go? When life gives you lemons, use them to make lemonade.

Hmmm...I wonder.....will the winds of change be upon us once again....???

Has Spring Sprung???

Our back yard today.....

Around town....

I know, I know.....wishful thinking......sigh.... I realize we're not done with winter...not yet and not by a long shot.

Our snow, which wasn't much to begin with, was drastically reduced by rain and a warm spell.

So much for those 15' year round snow banks we were warned we get.

An award

Linda, over at Remotetree Changer, has awarded me this award. Thanks very much Linda!

The rules for the Honest Scrap award:

The honorees are to:

A) first list 10 honest things about yourself - and make it interesting, even if you have to dig deep!

B) pass the award on to 7 bloggers that you feel embody the spirit of the Honest Scrap

Ok....let's get to it.

1) I hate shopping for pants. I am 5'8" tall, with most of my height coming from my legs. Regular pants are just toooo short for my legs....and I get frustrated at how short regular pants are.

2) I do not own bathroom scales. When we moved from Ontario to NL, dh told me we couldn't bring all of our stuff....we had to lighten the load. I graciously got rid of the bathroom scales (I know....pretty decent of me, wasn't it?? *wink*)

3) I like using smileys.....they just add so much feeling to a post.

4) I really want to visit Hawaii and Australia some day.

5) I love to travel.

6) I love to play the piano.....but only for my own enjoyment. I don't like playing in front of others.

7) I am not looking forward to having my dc leave home. I feel I've just got used of having them around and now I have to get ready for them to move on. Yes....separation anxiety redefined.

8) After a year of a wide variety amounts of symptoms, Drs. visits and tests, I've been dx with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). This does not sit well with this up-until-now physically active person. I am determined to not let this get the best of me....I still have lots I wish to do (see number 4, for starters). I *will* work around this.

9) I like to wear bright colours.

10) I am really an alien......lol....ok.....not really but I just wanted to make sure you're all still awake lol. Hot buttered popcorn is one of my favourite snacks. Mmmmm.

A game!!

Yofed, over at The Land of cheerios, Sticky Fingers and Muddy Shoes participated in a Meme. She had to list 10 things she loved that began with the letter "C" and instructions for anyone else who wanted to play to leave her a note and she'd give a letter. Even though she didn't choose chocolate as one of her favourite C things, I thought I'd give the game a try.

So....she has given me the letter "N". I have to name 10 things I love that start with the letter "N".

Sooo....here goes...

I betcha all can't guess what the number one thing will be....can ya *grin*

1) NEWFOUNDLAND!! I know, I know....surprise surprise lol

2) Noodles --- I love all things noodles....always have and probably always will.

3) Noon --- Lunch has always been my favourite meal of the day. Supper was too heavy. Breakfast foods...well they never excited me too much....but the Noon meal --- my favourite (time to eat lots of Noodles)

4) Naps ---- I've come to love naps. When I was younger....I hated them. I was so excited when I started Kindergarten....I thought *finally* I'd be able to give up my stupid, stupid afternoon nap ....but guess what? I only went to school in the morning and was *still* home in time for my afternoon nap. Oh brother.

5) North Pole --- Honestly, who can not love where Santa lives?

6) Nature ---- Icebergs, Whales, Rocks, Oceans, Blue Sky....hmmmm no further explanation needed on this one.

7) News --- I love listening to the news, reading the news and trying to be as up-to-date as what is going on in the world. That's one thing I miss about Ontario....they had an all news radio station.....but there doesn't seem to be one here (not that I've found anyway).....except I *can* get that Toronto all news station on our satellite tv...so not all is lost (except...the announcers sound funny to me now......they have no accent....or is it them that has the accent?). One of the local radio stations here does have several call-in shows where people can discuss anything......so...that's a good way to keep up on what is going on locally.

I still read the on-line versions of the newspapers from the town where we used to live. I also check the local funeral homes' death notices too....I like to keep up on all of these kinds of things.

My dad jokes that I know more about what goes on in his town (the same town where I used to live) than he does. He's in Florida right now for the winter. Somebody else down there heard a little bit of news about home but didn't have any details. My Dad said he'd call Newfoundland to find out what is going on in Ontario.

8) Nicknames --- I looovvee nicknames! Well....I like assigning them rather....but it's still the same thing right? When I was younger, I especially liked assigning nicknames to my little brother. He never thought too highly of the nicknames I came up with for him....not sure why.....I guess he just didn't appreciate my gift of choosing such excellent names. Like....when my parents used to make him get a reaalllyyy short hair cut (we're talking a buzz cut)....I thought nicknames like Peach Fuzz and Bean Shave were quite appropriate. Then when the ...... ummm...effectiveness (read: they no longer bothered him) of those wore off....I came up with ......my personal favourite (which won me the most punches).....Woo Woo (I arrived at this name after one hair cut...I was running my hand over his hair cut that he hadn't really appreciated and I was saying, "Wooo Wooo").

But....I no longer call him these names.....he's big now.....6'3".....I address him as Mr. S_________ (not really but I've long since lost the nicknames)

9) Nieces --- I have the cutest nieces!

10) Nourishment ---- I love my food mmmm.....

There....I did it!

Anyone else want to play along? Leave me a comment and I'll come up with a letter for you.

Molytail, over at Tails Gone West, has awarded me with:

Snowfall

It snowed here last night....not quite the storm they were predicting, but we did get about 10 - 12 cms (4 or 5 in) just the same. There are mostly evergreen trees around here and we just love the way the snow sticks to them.

I went for a walk down to the ocean, armed with my camera. Here is a picture tour from around our yard.

(Click pictures to enlarge them)

Starting from inside and looking out our front window ........

Outside looking down our driveway.....

Looking toward the ocean from beside our house

Looking north east .... our shed, next year's heating supply and the Atlantic Ocean

Panning to the right around our back yard

Even further to the right

In our back yard, heading down our trail toward the ocean

On the trail...

Two more pics from on the trail

From the lookout

We feel truly blessed to be able to live here and see sights like this every.single. day.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

At the hotel getting ready to hit the pool (One of our boys loves, loves, loves to get his picture taken....the other one detests it. Betcha can't guess which is which lol...)

In the pool...

Leaving the boat and heading off to watch the fireworks

Finally....the fireworks.

There was supposed to be fireworks in different shapes....like smiley faces etc. The first few looked like normal fireworks....so we were using our imaginations here to 'see' shapes in the fireworks lol. Oh my.....what things we 'saw' lol The batteries to the camera died...so we didn't get too much of the show .... but a bit is better than nothing.

Happy New Year!!!

Wow.... it's hard to believe another year has gone by. Seems as if I was just getting used of it being 2008....and now it's gone. Time to get used of it being 2009.

We had a great New Year's Eve. We decided to get a hotel room at a hotel with a pool and a hot tub. When we lived in Ontario, we always spent 3 days at Niagara Falls during March Break. This is one thing the dc miss about Ontario, so we thought this would be a good time to do something similar. We did not tell the kids we were going. After they got up in the morning, we just told them, "Hurry up and get your breakfast. After that pack an overnight bag....put your bathing suit in and bring lots of warm clothes too...hat, mittens, scarves etc." They of course wanted to know where we were going, but Larry and I were tight-lipped.

We cleaned up from breakfast, packed our things and then van. I decided to check my emails one last time before heading out and there was one from a family we had recently met. They are from Michigan, USA, and have set out on a one-year sailing adventure (at least one year......they may decide to stay longer, depending on a few different things). They've sailed from Michigan to NL and are staying here for the winter. Next June, they are planning on heading to Greenland and hopefully through the Northwest Passage...if it is open. Wow! is all I can say.....what an amazing experience it will be for them. Anyway....I digress lol...but we received an email from them inviting us to come to their boat for awhile for some desserts and then we could all head over to watch the fireworks.

We had received some gift certificates for Christmas from Swiss Chalet, so we decided to go there for a late lunch first. After lunch, we headed off to the hotel. Larry and the three kids headed off to the pool and hot tub for the afternoon. (I stayed in the hotel room to rest....I'm still trying to get my health issues sorted out and I wanted to be as well rested as possible for the activities planned for later).

We eventually got Brittney out of the pool and dried off lol. She loves to swim and would stay there all day if she could. About 9:00 or so we headed off to the direction of the boat.

We found the boat and met up with them. We haven't been around too many boats....and I think that was kind of obvious lol. We boarded their boat and visited for awhile.....or should I say listened to Jake talk for awhile lol. We did manage to get a few words in around Jake's...but it was challenging at times. We enjoyed some great desserts together as well.

About 11:15, we all got bundled up and headed off to see the fireworks. It was a pretty walk....the snow all around as well as Christmas lights still up. Eventually the fireworks started....and we weren't disappointed in the display....it was a really good presentation.

After they were over, we headed back to the boat. We said our goodbyes and headed back to our hotel. Jake.was.wired.....I know...that is hard to believe....but you'll just have to take my word for it *wink wink*.

Eventually, we got everyone settled down and to sleep. It was a short night though....we had to be up in good time. We wanted to take advantage of the free breakfast offered by the hotel and Brittney and Jake also wanted to have one more (or 300) swim. As checkout time was 11:00 a.m., we needed to keep moving.

They all seemed to enjoy the night away. It was a nice break. We are home now though. Tomorrow we'll take the tree down, put the house back into order and get ready to face January.

Wishing everyone all the best for 2009!!!
