An award

Linda, over at Remotetree Changer, has awarded me this award. Thanks very much Linda!

The rules for the Honest Scrap award:

The honorees are to:

A) first list 10 honest things about yourself - and make it interesting, even if you have to dig deep!

B) pass the award on to 7 bloggers that you feel embody the spirit of the Honest Scrap

Ok....let's get to it.

1) I hate shopping for pants. I am 5'8" tall, with most of my height coming from my legs. Regular pants are just toooo short for my legs....and I get frustrated at how short regular pants are.

2) I do not own bathroom scales. When we moved from Ontario to NL, dh told me we couldn't bring all of our stuff....we had to lighten the load. I graciously got rid of the bathroom scales (I know....pretty decent of me, wasn't it?? *wink*)

3) I like using smileys.....they just add so much feeling to a post.

4) I really want to visit Hawaii and Australia some day.

5) I love to travel.

6) I love to play the piano.....but only for my own enjoyment. I don't like playing in front of others.

7) I am not looking forward to having my dc leave home. I feel I've just got used of having them around and now I have to get ready for them to move on. Yes....separation anxiety redefined.

8) After a year of a wide variety amounts of symptoms, Drs. visits and tests, I've been dx with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). This does not sit well with this up-until-now physically active person. I am determined to not let this get the best of me....I still have lots I wish to do (see number 4, for starters). I *will* work around this.

9) I like to wear bright colours.

10) I am really an alien......lol....ok.....not really but I just wanted to make sure you're all still awake lol. Hot buttered popcorn is one of my favourite snacks. Mmmmm.

A game!!

Yofed, over at The Land of cheerios, Sticky Fingers and Muddy Shoes participated in a Meme. She had to list 10 things she loved that began with the letter "C" and instructions for anyone else who wanted to play to leave her a note and she'd give a letter. Even though she didn't choose chocolate as one of her favourite C things, I thought I'd give the game a try.

So....she has given me the letter "N". I have to name 10 things I love that start with the letter "N".

Sooo....here goes...

I betcha all can't guess what the number one thing will be....can ya *grin*

1) NEWFOUNDLAND!! I know, I know....surprise surprise lol

2) Noodles --- I love all things noodles....always have and probably always will.

3) Noon --- Lunch has always been my favourite meal of the day. Supper was too heavy. Breakfast foods...well they never excited me too much....but the Noon meal --- my favourite (time to eat lots of Noodles)

4) Naps ---- I've come to love naps. When I was younger....I hated them. I was so excited when I started Kindergarten....I thought *finally* I'd be able to give up my stupid, stupid afternoon nap ....but guess what? I only went to school in the morning and was *still* home in time for my afternoon nap. Oh brother.

5) North Pole --- Honestly, who can not love where Santa lives?

6) Nature ---- Icebergs, Whales, Rocks, Oceans, Blue Sky....hmmmm no further explanation needed on this one.

7) News --- I love listening to the news, reading the news and trying to be as up-to-date as what is going on in the world. That's one thing I miss about Ontario....they had an all news radio station.....but there doesn't seem to be one here (not that I've found anyway).....except I *can* get that Toronto all news station on our satellite tv...so not all is lost (except...the announcers sound funny to me now......they have no accent....or is it them that has the accent?). One of the local radio stations here does have several call-in shows where people can discuss anything......so...that's a good way to keep up on what is going on locally.

I still read the on-line versions of the newspapers from the town where we used to live. I also check the local funeral homes' death notices too....I like to keep up on all of these kinds of things.

My dad jokes that I know more about what goes on in his town (the same town where I used to live) than he does. He's in Florida right now for the winter. Somebody else down there heard a little bit of news about home but didn't have any details. My Dad said he'd call Newfoundland to find out what is going on in Ontario.

8) Nicknames --- I looovvee nicknames! Well....I like assigning them rather....but it's still the same thing right? When I was younger, I especially liked assigning nicknames to my little brother. He never thought too highly of the nicknames I came up with for him....not sure why.....I guess he just didn't appreciate my gift of choosing such excellent names. Like....when my parents used to make him get a reaalllyyy short hair cut (we're talking a buzz cut)....I thought nicknames like Peach Fuzz and Bean Shave were quite appropriate. Then when the ...... ummm...effectiveness (read: they no longer bothered him) of those wore off....I came up with ......my personal favourite (which won me the most punches).....Woo Woo (I arrived at this name after one hair cut...I was running my hand over his hair cut that he hadn't really appreciated and I was saying, "Wooo Wooo").

But....I no longer call him these names.....he's big now.....6'3".....I address him as Mr. S_________ (not really but I've long since lost the nicknames)

9) Nieces --- I have the cutest nieces!

10) Nourishment ---- I love my food mmmm.....

There....I did it!

Anyone else want to play along? Leave me a comment and I'll come up with a letter for you.

I've been tagged...

by Linda over at Remote Treechanger in a Love To Read Tag

I must admit.....I'm not much of a reader....so I'll answer as best I can.

Who is your all time favorite author and why?

I've always liked Laura Ingalls Wilder. I first enjoyed the tv series and from there went to the books.

Do you still consider him/her to be among your favorites?

Yes

Who is the most recent addition to your favorite authors and why?

In recent years I haven't had too much time for reading just for enjoyment. Currently, most of my reading time is taken up with newspapers, magazines, books about homeschooling etc. I'm hoping in the future to get back into reading much more though.

If someone asked you who your favorite authors were right now, which authors would first pop out of your mouth?

I would still say Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Hmmmm....I'm not sure who to tag as there are so many blogs I enjoy reading. Sooo...if you're reading this and would like to play along, consider yourself tagged. Please let me know if you decide to play!

I've been tagged!

Here is a book meme from Yofed.

Here's the rules:
Grab the nearest book.
Open the book to page 56.
Find the fifth sentence.
Post the text of the next two to five sentences in your journal/blog along with these instructions.
Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.
Tag five other people to do the same.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

okey dokey. Me, being the interesting person that I am lol (insert rolling-eye smiley here) find the closest book to me at the moment to be a homeschooling resource recently received from Veterans Affairs Canada. It is called Canada and The Great War 1914 - 1918 A Nation Born

Page 56, These sentences read:

"Others portrayed them as brutal and evil: for example, in a comic published in July 1915 there is the line: "Everywhere he looked he could see nothing but scowling, hideous visages of pallid Germans." Many comics carried collectors' items such as coloured pictures of the uniforms of Allied armies."

Cool Meme...

I'm not going to tag anyone but if you're so inclined to play along, then consider yourself tagged! Don't forget to let me know if you've chosen to play along.

I've been tagged!

I have been tagged by Linda over at Remote Treechanger. Linda lives in Australia and is a reader here.

This is what I have to do:

1. List (at least) five things to do for free in your city or town, not just well publicized touristy things, but things YOU might do too!

2. Write it with a visitor in mind.

3. Tag three people* - extra fun if they live somewhere you'd like to know better or

4. If you're anonymous/coy about where you live, choose another town or city that you know.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Hmmm...this is a tough one as there are so many things here in NL to see. This list is probably only the tip of the iceberg (pun intended lol). We are still finding our way around here and seem to find new and interesting things almost daily.

That said, I think five choices I would make are:

1) The natural beauty of the area. There is lots of it, everywhere you look and it's free! Take for example the picture at the top of this blog....that is taken from our back yard. These types of scenes are available all throughout Newfoundland. Click on "Newfoundland Scenery" on the right side bar to see more.

2) The Icebergs (click on label "Icebergs" on the right side bar to see some). Nature's travelling art show indeed!

3) The Whales. What a show they put on....swimming and playing the way they do.

4) Cape Spear would be a choice. As the most easterly point in North America, definitely a must see.

5) Gros Morne National Park (Click here to see a slide show of pictures -- there are several to see but take a few seconds to start) . I'm pretty sure there is a charge to enjoy this park but well worth it.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Sooo....who's next?

I'm not going to tag anybody specifically as there are so many areas I'd like to see/learn about.

If you're so inclined to play....I'd love to learn more about your area!

I've been tagged!

Linda from Our Little House in Town has tagged me!

The rules of the game get posted at the beginning.

Each player answers the questions about themselves.

At the end of the post, the player then tags 6 people and posts their names, then goes to their blogs and leaves them a comment, letting them know they’ve been tagged and asking them to read your blog.

Let the person who tagged you know when you’ve posted your answer.

a) What was I doing 10 years ago?

Well, Jake had just been born in April. We were living in Oshawa, Ontario but were having our 'dream home' built on Scugog Island, Ontario. We were in the process of trying to sell our home, pack up our things and look after a newborn. Tyler was 5, Brittney was 3 and I was a busy. Larry was taking a course on archeology and teaching full-time in Toronto.

b) What are 5 things on my to-do list for today:

I didn't do too much today. It was my birthday and I got spoiled. Brittney made supper and wouldn't let me into the kitchen. Jake made an interesting dessert and Tyler did the dishes and cleaned up the kitchen. Hmmm....I could get used of this ;)

c) Snacks I enjoy:

Chocolate!! *grin* I also like potato chips, popcorn, ice cream, candy (hmmm I guess my secret that I'm a junk food junkie is out lol)

d) Things I would do if I were a billionaire:

Travel ---- Larry and I love travelling so we' be all set. Places I would visit --- Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, California, The southern states, The Caribbean (a cruise), England .... hmmmmm...I'm sure there are more places but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Larry would retire, although continue to substitute teach, tutor...just so he didn't get too bored.

We'd renovate our home to make it exactly as we'd like.

We'd put money away for each of the kid's education.

Hmm....wonder if there'd be any left? I hope sooo....we'd put some away to generate an income to live off of.

e) Places I have lived:

I was born and grew up in Port Perry, Ontario. I moved to Oshawa, Ontario. From there back to Port Perry and now in Newfoundland.

And who am I tagging?

Jacqueline

Taking a Break from the Icebergs

OK....I know I've posted a lot about icebergs lately so thought I should take a break. (grin). I saw this posted on another blog I like to read and thought I'd play along.......

RANDOM BITS

Snagged this from Molytail :-)

Where is your cell phone?
Well...I don't really have one that I use. The one I have, has an Ontario number. Since we're not in Ontario any more and it would cost an arm and a leg to use it here, we simply don't use it. But....the phone itself is out in the van.

Your significant other?
Larry is at work.

Your hair?
Shoulder length and brown (and no....those two or three grey things in there are NOT grey hairs ;0))

Your mother?
Hmmm...I could write a book here. My mother is no longer living and has been gone 18.5 years now. Wow time flies. In some respects, it feels like just yesterday I saw and talked to her and at other times, it seems like an eternity. I miss her a lot...we were best friends! She was always there for me and I could count on her always. She always wanted grandchildren and never got to meet any of them (between my brother and I, she would now have five!) Mother's Day is coming up and I always have difficulty with that day. I hope I can be half the mom my mom was.

Your father?
He lives in Ontario with my step-mom, Marilyn. He enjoys fairly good health, is very active and very busy with his life and various activities. About five years ago, he made the transition from the family farm, where he was born and lived for 77 years, to an apartment in town. They travel a lot and spend every winter and Christmas in Florida (while the rest of us freeze here in Canada)

Your favorite thing?
My new laptop ;0)

Your dream last night?
Hmmmm...can't remember any dreams from last night.

Your favorite drink?
Ummm.....COFFEE!!!

Your dream/goal?
.....Need to think about this one.

Your ex?
I would think Ontario

Your fear?
Mice --- eek!

Where were you last night?
At home, talking on the phone.

What are you not?
Rich.

Muffins?
Mmmmmm....love all muffins!

One of your wish list items?
Health and Happiness

Where you grew up?

Port Perry, Ontario

The last thing you did?
Ate lunch.

What are you wearing?
Bluish/Purple Slush pants, T shirt

Your pets?
None, although I told the kids while everyone else talks about their pet cats or dogs etc., they can talk about their pet icebergs (lol)

Your life?
Good, most days.

Your mood?
....shrug....

Missing someone?
Yah....my mom

Your car?
2008 Pontiac Montana Van

Something you are not wearing?
A winter coat

Like someone?
Yep...like lotsa people

Your favorite color?
Die hard pink fan here----love pink! Red would be my next colour

When is the last time you laughed?
Hmmm...not sure

Who will re post this?

Not sure...but if you want to play.....go ahead and repost this.

Six Word Memoir -- A Meme

Well, it would seem that Penelope, over at Roots and Wings has tagged me. I've often seen these types of things posted on other's blogs and thought it would be fun to play.

Here's the story behind the meme (as copied from the original post):

As I read yet another book review of a memoir this weekend, my husband told me that I should write one. I said that my story would be much too short and rather boring so when I ran across the following book I decided it was just my speed. A six word memoir! Written by Larry Smith and Rachel Fershleiser, Not Quite What I was Planning: Six Word Memoirs by Writers Famous and Obscure is a compilation based on the story that Hemingway once bet ten dollars that he could sum up his life in six words. His words were- For Sale: baby shoes, never worn. There’s a video on Amazon with examples from the book, it sounds like a fun read! I’d like to start a six word memoir meme and here are the rules:

1. Write your own six word memoir

2. Post it on your blog and include a visual illustration if you’d like

3. Link to the person that tagged you in your post and to this original post if possible so we can track it as it travels across the blogosphere

4. Tag five more blogs with links

5. And don’t forget to leave a comment on the tagged blogs with an invitation to play!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

This is a lot more difficult than it seems on the surface! I had a lot of fun as I tried to come up with six words.

However......without further adieu......here is what I came up with......

Steeped in Tradition......Growing in Adventure

So....according the rules of the game I have to tag 5 other people to participate. That means, most of the people I will tag may be somewhat surprised (as I usually only lurk on other's blogs).

So....Yofed, Mama Squirrel, Amber, Laurie ....and one still be determined....you've been tagged!!
